Karibuni was born in 2002, from an idea a group of friends had during a trip in Kenya. The knowledge of the local situation led to develop first aid and support interventions. In 2004 Karibuni Onlus was set up (in Swahili Karibuni means Welcome) with the aim of carrying out school, educational and health projects, as we believe that the growth of a people, and its future, come from strong educational roots and from adequate health facilities.
Karibuni built schools in Watamu, Gede, Langobaya, Marafa, Gis, Jmba, Malanga, Mpeketoni, Meru, Mida. These today welcome more than 5,000 students.
As far as health is concerned, Karibuni took action (got involved) in various fields, creating dispensaries and hospital wards, bringing Medical Team doctors (cardiologists, pediatricians, gynecologists, dentists and other professionals) to visit on the spot.
In the hospital in Gede, today the second in the province, we realized the pediatric and maternity wards. We completed kitchens in Marafa, a dispensary in Watamu. Four local health professionals are permanently employed by Karibuni in these facilities.
We dedicated attention to sport, an important educational and social tool, sponsoring the Karibuni Genoa football school in Malindi and building a basketball court at Barani Secondary School, the only one in an area of about 100 sq km.
In Langobaya, Karibuni sponsors the men’s volleyball team and women’s football team while AC Desio wears the Karibuni logo on its sports uniforms.
Our commitment
To provide self support to our schools and to guarantee food support, we opened seven farms that today occupy over 300,000 square meters with diversified crops: bananas, cassava, casuarinas, mangoes, pineapples, watermelons, papayas, tomatoes, onions, aubergines and much more. We breed goats, chickens for eggs and meat, cows and donkeys.
The last frontier: the work, without which our children can not have any guarantee for their future. Through an extensive micro-credit program we facilitate the opening of over 100 small businesses, agricultural and livestock activities involving hundreds of families and we employ many people in our farms. The production of our farms guarantees daily meals for 800 children of the schools of Langobaya while part of the production is sold allowing a partial coverage of all expenses.
Karibuni is supported by donations and the collaboration of its members and the many initiatives they organize throughout Italy. Karibuni devotes 97% of its resources directly to projects and only 3% is used for current management.
In Kenya, Karibuni has fixed and rotating volunteers to work and verify the good performance of all activities and to promote the concept of a shared cooperation, which is the core of our vision.
THE MORE WE WILL BE, THE MORE WE WILL DO …. It is one of our mottos. If you share our projects, the way we work, write to us. And if you go to Kenya, do not miss to visit the projects realized by Karibuni and maybe stop in our farm and enjoy a fantastic picnic. Your testimony will help us to grow even more.
